Installation

Get the latest version of by clicking here. Save the file somewhere on your hard-drive (you may need to right-click on the link and choose Save Target As...).

Note: if you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer on Windows, and have applied the "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (832894)", then there is a possibility that the javascript client will not function correctly. If you receive "Page Not Found" errors when trying to update your domain, then this is likely the case.

In this patch, Microsoft disabled the ability to log into a website with a URL in the format http://user:pass@www.example.com. The Javascript client relies on this ability.

You can apply a change to the Windows Registry to re-enable this feature. To do this, download this file to your desktop, right-click on it, and choose Install or Merge (depending on which version of Windows you are using). You may need to then restart your computer, but the Javascript client should work again.

Open the file HTML file you just downloaded in your web browser. You will see a brief notice (click Ok to continue), and you will then see a screen similar to the following:

Configuration

You configure the Javascript client using the upper, purple box, and can see the results of updates in the lower, grey box.

Fill out the "Username" and "Password" fields with the username and password you use to acces your management pages on netstep DNS. Your password will be hidden as you type it.

Fill out the "Hostname" field with the full hostname you want to update with the client. For example, if you want to update "www.example.com" with the client, then enter "www.example.com" in the field. If you just want to update your "root" domain, then you would enter "example.com" instead. The host name you enter must be configured for dynamic records in your DNS management pages.

If you have also configured a wildcard record for dynamic update, you can set the Update Wildcard to yes.

Unfortunately, the Javascript client can not automatically detect when your IP address has changed, so you will need to decide how frequently you would like the client to update our servers.

(You also have the option of doing a one-time update, which you can use if you don't want to keep the client running continuously.)

Once you have all the settings in place, click the Start Updater button:

If all goes well, you dynamic settings will be updated and you can see the results in the grey status box:

The client will update as frequently as you set the "Refresh Interval" above, until you close your web browser or click the Stop Updater

Troubleshooting

If you don't receive an response of "OK" in the status box, you will receive an error message along with instructions on what caused the error. Often, the error can be fixed by changing the settings in the Javascript client (e.g. incorrect username or password), or by making a change in your DNS management pages (e.g. forgetting to set up a host for dynamic updates).

If you continue to receive error messages and can not figure out how to solve the problem, feel free to contact our support staff.
